I knew last year as I was preparing for my move here each season that passed there may be my last experienced in Michigan or possibly the United States, I have no idea where this life will take me after all!
I let myself drift back and remember last year running early in the morning in MI and watching the frost start to thaw and drip from the trees and overhead sounds of Canadian Geese making their way south . Yes, I was a runner then. I have ran on and off for years... let's say more off than on at this point.... I can remember the smells of the leaves and the sounds of the tractors taking off crops. You just know it's Autumn by the smells and sounds when you live in Michigan oh and the scents of baked goods with apples and cinnamon!!!
The leaves have been changing here for a few weeks. The country is pretty much white birch and pines from the sea shore of Helsinki to the far reaches of Lapland (which we visited for a few weeks this summer). In our travels just around the city and a few short drives out and about we have spotted an occasional and very distinct color change of maple, oak and Virginia Creeper adding splashes of color to the Fall landscape.
I have been walking (not running) in the afternoons to the river that leads to the Baltic Sea everyday there are signs that the Autumn is a very short season here.
I digress...

I think I will mostly miss apple cider and the visits to the apple orchard with my daughters. I miss the endless isles of Halloween candy in the stores. I put in an order back home for mini Reese's for the guys in the house. They LOVE Reese's!!!
I also miss homes changing from summer decor to fall displays on front porches and wreaths on doors. It just dawned on me... I miss front porches! Where are the front porches here?
I miss the HUGE displays of USA grown pumpkins and gourds but to my sheer delight last night in our grocery store was a crate of pumpkins at 1.25€ per kilo!!!! We came home with 2 very fine ones!
This morning first thing.... I opened the fall decor I so carefully packed away 1 year ago and shipped over. By September I usually had changed up my (ever so tasteful.. (lol) in my own mind) fall seasonal decor. I remember packing it and day dreaming about the next time it would be viewed... in my home across the big water.
My heart raced this morning unwrapping my sweet little folk art spider that traveled from Frankenmuth to Finland! I remember buying it with daughter Rachel 2 years ago. I had such a nice memory of that day and the silly little spider with his silly little smile made me feel like I wasn't so far away for a while.
